Quantitative Sciences Major
***Curricular changes effective Fall 2017: QTM 150 and QTM 151 (one-credit statistical computing courses) are required courses for major students who declare Fall 2017 and after. They are highly recommended courses for all QSS major students.***
No matter the discipline or profession, data is increasingly central. To meet the increasing demand for research and analytical skills to interpret that data, we offer a major in quantitative sciences (QSS), which provides training that is quantitatively rigorous but with a focus on real-world applications.
With the QSS major, Emory students now have the opportunity to receive thorough quantitative training while they study subjects in the natural sciences, social sciences, or humanities. You’ll take both quantitative classes (such as statistics, game theory, and experimental methods) and classes in an associated substantive discipline based on your area of interest (such as political science, psychology, neuroscience and behavioral biology, history, or women’s, gender, and sexuality studies)*. This unique interdisciplinary approach enables you to learn quantitative theory and methods that apply directly to your academic and career interests—whatever they happen to be.
The QSS major is rigorous, yet accessible to students of all academic interests and mathematical backgrounds. You’re not expected to have a mathematical background beyond algebra and calculus when you first enroll.
The QSS Major Checklist details what coursework is required to complete the B.S. Tracks with no specific course requirements use this checklist and include:
- East Asian Studies
- Latin American and Caribbean Studies
- Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
The following tracks have unique checklists due to specific course requirements:
