Quantitative Sciences Major

Overview of the QSS major

The Quantitative Sciences (QSS) major is the integration of liberal arts and data science. With the QSS major, students learn data science techniques and quantitative theory while they study the natural sciences, social sciences, or humanities.

You will take quantitative classes (such as statistics, game theory, and experimental methods) and classes in an associated discipline based on your area of interest (such as political science, psychology, neuroscience and behavioral biology, history, and more).

Finally, a major as diverse as your interests!

If you aren't sure what discipline you want to pursue, you can start with the "Undeclared" QSS track and choose your discipline later. The core quantitative coursework is the same no matter what path you eventually pick.

What distinguishes QSS from similar majors?

  • A common core of quantitative classes allows you to seamlessly switch between areas of disciplinary interest. Don't want to study QSS with psychology anymore? The core QSS classes (Intro to Scientific Methods, Intro to Statistical Computing, Calculus, Probability and Statistics, and Regression Analysis) will transfer to any other QSS track, simply requiring a new set of electives to get your bearings in your new field.
  • Simply put, there is no other major like QSS. There is room for a quantitative approach to data in any field of study: QTM currently offers 19 tracks (and growing). QTM's unique interdisciplinary approach enables you to learn quantitative theory and methods that apply directly to your academic and career interests—whatever they happen to be.

This major will prepare you for:

  • Employment in data-oriented or quantitative fields
  • Becoming a "Type A" Data Scientist (data analyst)
  • Graduate school in business analytics, humanities, social sciences, or physical and natural sciences
